While his writing s filled with words foreign to me – some common enough to be known, some not – including in this case a lot of nautical terms, I don’t find this distracts from the narrative.

The prison, and the life in the hold of the ship are two other settings that come to mind as richly painted scenes.

Just prior to this incident, quite in the beginning, we see how is brutally treated, insulted and almost raped by a few upper caste men in his village.

Kalua manages to kill him. I wish it were available now. As this is said to be the first part of a projected trilogy, I’ll be waiting with bated breath for the next installment. Nov 13, Doug Bradshaw rated it it was amazing. Deeti followed a step behind, carrying his food and water, handing the cloth-wrapped package to him after he had climbed in.

Of course, you’ll polpies the jokes better if you’re an Indian, or acquainted with Indian culture.

It is just a perfect historical fiction experience. I was not disappointed. I’d recommend this book to anyone.

Land, River, Sea, moving the story along from the introduction to all of these very colorful characters to their assembly and journey on the Ibis which used to carry slaves and now transports workers and convicts to Mauritius. Amitav Ghosh is a master of storytelling, unravelling a plot in which everycharacter embarks themselves in a journey that will lead them to a ship, the Ibis.

Numerous plot developments are facilitated by Nob Kissin Baboo, a Vaishnavite would-be priest who is working as an overseer for Mr Burnham and comes to believe that Zachary is an avatar of Krishna. The language details are incredibly authentic and a lot of research has gone into the traits of dialects and slang language, from sailors to servants, and from merchants to Rajas.

Yet whereas MacArthur wanted to show how the factory operated in each season, Ghosh makes all its activities simultaneous.

Burnham with the need to poppues off his estates in order to pay for the debt he had incurred when investing in the opium trade with China. Rather than spending a lot of time trying to sort through that, it’s better to plough through it all because much of it isn’t very important. It was visited by Kipling. Several characters experience precipitous falls from grace and yet also find redemption. It has it’s own rhythm and amiatv, but I actually feel that it was a bit showy and even a little lazy.

Obviously, it would be more helpful if all gosh words are included so that readers wouldn’t miss any bit of dialogue.

Is this written ghoshh for those few people who speak both languages and know the historical usages of these words? Ever since Walter Scott published Waverley inreaders have turned to historical fiction not just for escape from a straitened and conventional present, but also for instruction. However, I have a few observations and comments to make.

Useless to the farmers, yes, but highly profitable to the East India Company. So, I give it a double thumbs upand highly recommend it!

Sea of Poppies (Ibis Trilogy, #1) by Amitav Ghosh

As you can see, Ghosh introduces this diversity so as to display the multiculturality of India at the times of the colony in contrast to the imperialist view of one people talking English and having the ultimate desire to become like their English masters.

Initial Thoughts and Part I 20 19 Dec 15, With the support of the lascars, especially their leader Serang Ali, he becomes the second in command of the ship. Climate Change and the Unthinkable Now that the trade has come to a standstill, as a result of the resistance shown by the Chinese pf, he is unable to clear his debt. At a more everyday level, Ghosh creates an encyclopedia of early 19th-century Indian food, servants, furniture, religious worship, nautical commands, male and female costume and underlinen, trades, marriage and funeral rites, botany and horticulture, opium cultivation, alcoholic drinks, grades of clerk and non-commissioned amiitav officers, criminal justice, sexual practices, traditional medicines and sails and rigging.

Ghosh is a fantastic author and I truly want to read more of his books. I enjoy the writing of Amitav Ghosh a lot. Probably Ghosh’s best and most impressive work to date.

Ghosh’s attention to character and affection for language brim to the top of every page. Nor does it matter that Ghosh, like Rushdie, sometimes reads like Kipling and Jim Corbett and those British memoirists of the Camp-and-Cantonment school.

I think the rave reviews are deserved and that this book is a huge accomplishment. As a whole, they are not to be liked.
